Once you’ve determined that your home contains asbestos that needs to be removed and you’ve hired a certified and experienced asbestos abatement company, you should be aware of the asbestos removal procedures.

The first step in the asbestos removal process is to create an abatement enclosure. This is accomplished by lining the area to be serviced with layers of heavy-duty plastic on the walls, floor and ceiling. Once this is complete, a negative air pressure machine is installed and sealed directly to the enclosure so that any asbestos that is released into the workspace cannot be released into your home. Next, a set of three sealed decontamination chambers are installed and sealed directly to the enclosure. These chambers consist of a dirty room, a shower and a clean room. Once the abatement enclosure is complete, caution tape and signs indicating that asbestos removal is being performed are installed in and around your home.

The process of removing asbestos begins with the abatement team putting on disposable protection suits and respirators. Once inside the abatement enclosure, the asbestos is removed and placed into bags. During removal, the asbestos is wetted either with a hand sprayer or dropped directly into water already in the bags. Wetting is important because asbestos particles become airborne during removal.

Once the asbestos has been removed and bagged, it goes through the decontamination chambers. The bags are first enclosed in the dirty room. From there, an abatement team member moves each bag into the shower area where it is washed off to ensure that no asbestos particles remain on the outside of the bag. After each bag is washed, it is moved to the clean room, where it is bagged again in a clean bag, sealed and labeled. Lastly, each bag is moved to a dumpster to be taken to a landfill that is federally designated as an asbestos disposal site.

Now that you know what to expect when asbestos is removed from your home, we hope that we’ve helped to alleviate any worry or stress regarding the process.
